A Thousand Lies and Circumstance

This book was very personal to me, not only because of the personal connection of the characters in it but because our class had the pleasure of listening to the thoughts of the incredible author herself. I enjoyed this book because it shows the daring of doing something for someone else. The main character in a way sacrifices herself in marrying a gay man, an act that can put her in a tough place. She of course is free to see her lover, even if it is as a friend to the onlookers, and not be afraid of people suspecting their truth. However it means she is married, and not to her lover. This is an important part of life to many, marrying the person you love because of how much you want to share your life with them. But in this case the marriage is a fraud, a cover, not an act of commitment in a consensual way. This can be very tough on everyone involved. It hurts so much to see the two lovers split apart by society's cruel way of relations. It broke my heart to watch her lover settled for a traditional marriage, therefor making it impossible for the two to live their lives in truth.
